If you want to experiment with statistics for two-handed use, improve the speed factor and AC adjustment for all armor types by + 1 and increase the damage inflicted to 3-9 (2d4 + 1). It is true that battle axes were often used with two hands, but this was because a man without a shield did not have anything better to do with his free hand and the axe's long haft provided space for the additional grip. Skip Williams's replies:Ě battle axe is not a two-handed weapon. Perhaps the battle axe should be treated like a bastard sword, with two sets of statistics? "Dragon 151 Q: Why isn't the battle axe listed as a two-handed weapon on table 49? Battle axes were used with two hands, at least sometimes. If you want Dragon magazine/the sage on it: Historically, I think you are thinking of this predecessor weapon: If you would like 2 more pole arms that fit the bill just as well as a bardiche, then one can also use the Voulge, or the Lochaber axe (Guisarme-Voulge).Īs I mentioned, other editions bring many more optional answers to the fore, if you want some of them? I'm sure there are a few sources, though I cannot recall any ATM, and I'm not sure it's too important, this particular wheel having been invented many times & places. I'm certain thousands have used it for 2 handed/large/long battle axes of various sorts, call it a case of "convergent evolution". Bardiche is an axe type pole arm, and it's right in the player's handbook. I'm just wondering if anyone can recall where this came from- as about a dozen people also quoted it in various posts. I read hundreds of pages on drsgons foot before posting- and Gary gygax commented affirmative to this idea but it was never specifically sited. It was likely from a character or npc or monster write up, but I was sure it was unearthed arcana. I had no idea what a bardiche was so I didn't invent it, I only learned about it about the time I Got unearthed arcana- maybe 1988 or 87. I specifically remember reading that a battle axe in 1e is one handed, and that a 2 handed version called a great axe uses the stats of the bardiche. They can be used, if desired (the 2 hands required folks basically came from B/X, even if they worked at TSR or put invisible ink/secret pages into dragon magazine). Other editions have different weapons, or mechanics. People often like to use the bardiche for such (a fine idea). There is no listing for a great axe, heavy battle axe, bearded axe, danish axe, etc. Genghisdon wrote:I'm not sure what the question is, but I assume it's hands & axes. Here is my original reply, it's from 5 years ago, when i did play more 1e stuff: I doubt it was in 2nd edition, I don't think it was dragon magazine or oriental adventures, but i could be wrong. I'm not the only one who remembers this, but after more than 30 years it's hard for me to recollect where i saw it. I really want to say that i read this in the Unearthed arcana at one point (and i even replied as much in a 2013 topic) but i can't find the obscure ruling anymore. I specifically remember reading that a double bladed battle axe (possibly called a great axe- i don't 100% remember) was treated as a bardiche with respects to damage. The one i'm still having trouble with is the battle axe- which has had a few topics here. I was transcribing the entire A0 (danger in darkshelf quarry) into an excel document (see below) and in the process i was running through a couple magic items that i knew the mechanics for, but couldn't find rules on (which drives me batty).įirst was the bastard sword- which i remembered could be used 1 or 2 handed, it was easy enough to find the rules covering this in the 2e players handbook, but i really had to scour the unearthed arcana to find the tiny little footnote saying it was a 2 handed weapon that could be used as a 1 handed weapon (with long sword stats footnote 5, page 27).
